What was my biggest discovery?
I was very interested in this challenge. We had a library inservice at the beginning of the year which got me interested but I needed a direction to go. This challenge gave me the opportunity to spend much more time on each area of the state library services. My first step was to get a library card so I can spend more time with research at home. I will have the opportunity to share the elementary resources with my kids so even though Corsica doesn't have a big library, I can access lots of information with my students and my own children.
My favorite activities were doing research. I enjoyed looking into different topics and found many different things I would like to go back and spend more time reading. I also really enjoyed looking into my family with ancestry, heritage and sanborn maps. I really appreciate all the time that you spent to put this together for a wonderful learning opportunity. Thank you!

Ancestry Library
I looked for my name and found my maiden name in the records but not my married name in Ancestry Library. Interesting? I found a map of Delmont and a map of Armour and located the places where my husband's family had lived since they are from Douglas county. I shared the map with his family also which they thought was interesting.
I did some more research and found out that two of my great-granparents were born in Canada. Also something that I didnt know either. I hope to find out more information- I find family research very interesting!
Thanks!

blogging
I have found out many new things thanks to my fellow bloggers, I still have many things to continue to research but I really enjoy reading your thoughts!
Camio
I looked up Paul Revere on Camio and found many different items that he made. He was very skilled and made many detailed items. Some of the ones that I found were: a tea urn, federal style tea service, silver spoon, sugar bowl and cover, sauceboat, goblet, urn and cann.
I looked up the Sioux and found a variety of artworks. The first was a picture of a Sioux woman holding her child probably in the early 1900s. I thought about all of the struggles that she must have faced- especially if her children were forced to go to the boarding schools of that era. What was her life like? She had such a detailed face with such expression.
I also found many artist drawings and paintings. There were a variety of topics: battle drawings, worship, dancing, beadwork and clothing.
I chose to look up several different artists. I looked at works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Many of these works of art would need to be screened out due to content for school but there were still several that would be interesting discussion points for our class.
I didn't know very many other artists from Mexico and found several artists that I want to further research: Paul Uribe, Rufino Tamayo, Maria Izquierdo, Jose Clemente Orozco and Francisco Antonio Vallejo. I did know a couple of them but I am curious to become more familiar with their works as well.

Lesson 9 Ancestry Library
Last week I went and used Ancestry Library. I was so involved in the research I didn't get back to posting here. I looked for my great-grandparents and great-great grandparents and I was able to find many of them on the census records. Then I decided to research my husband's family and discovered that he is from both Sweeden and Norway. Glad to know he is a Norwegian too!
I will have to go back and research my name and look for photos also.

Lesson 8 Archive Grid and Camio-
I finished this assignment at school and posted my findings in the comment box below.
Lesson 7 World Cat and First Searches
I typed in Little Women and found out that it was in 1448 libraries.
Charles Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities by Harold Bloom was in 981 libraries. Interesting that a book about this book would be in so many other libraries. Must be well know too. The first one on the list was Roosevelt High School Library.LC: PR 4571 and Dewey 828.3. He has written about several famous authors: F Scott Fitzgerald, best poems, shakespeare, the western canon, Yeats and Mark Twain. I found other books that were written about A Tale of Two Cities.
I typed in South Dakota fiction and found a book
Of Uncommon Birth: Dakota Sons of Vietnam, and Field of Honor (A review). I could not find where the access button was to click on right away but I did find it eventually. I found out more information about the book and that is was published by the Univeristy of Nebraska Press. It gave an intesting description of the book. It is about two South Dakota men who came from different backgrounds and came together in Vietnam. It describes their very different backgrounds and different lives and how they end up sharing experiences and the same fears. One man survives and the other does not. It sounded interesting!

Net Library
I found a very interesting book called Army Wives on the Frontier. It describes the life of pioneer army wives both on the east coast and out on the frontier. Since I am an army wife( my husband retired from the national guard after 22 years) I really found this book to be interesting. I didn't have time to read the whole thing but I set up a bookmark so I can go back to reading it. I haven't read a book on the computer before so I find that my eyes get tired and I can't read as long as I can a regular book.
I looked up Constitution Day and found many interesting books. The Bill of Rights: A Bicentennial Assessment was very detailed but interesting. I also found one The Constitution of the United States- which was just what it is called.
I also found a fiction story that they might read for Constitution Day- America As Story- Historical Fiction for Middle and Secondary Schools. It covers from colonial through modern day and has suggestions for reports.
Finally, I did a search on Nebraska- there were several interesting choices.
Some of these were: African Americans on the Western Frontier, From Fort Laramie to Wounded Knee: The West that Was, Uncommon Common Women: Ordinary Lives of the West- I will go back and spend some more time reading these resources. Looks interesting!

Gale Virtual Resource Library
I decided to research the civil war. I typed it in and found a variety of resources on several different civil wars. I looked at biographies of a few of them. I found the one that I read on Abraham Lincoln to be really interesting and something that would be appealing to students also.
I also learned that there was an undeclared civil war in Colombia from 1948-1958 between the two political parties. I had already read quite a bit about the very bloody Spanish Civil War but found several interesting articles there as well.

Proquest
I decided to look at language learning articles. From here, I ended up getting many different subjects that were related. I read articles on both ell and world language learners. Some of the articles discussed the problems and things that interfere with language aquisition. I also found an article with some new strategies to help students as well. A very powerful resource and I like that it will save your searches for you. I am enjoying reading the other blogs and have found out several useful tips!
SIRS Researcher
I looked at cell phones since our school does not allow students to have them in school that seems to be a hot topic with our students.
I enjoy looking at the hot topic of the day. The world almanac and maps gives you a huge list of statistics for the area that you are researching. I can see where this would be very handy for social science classes in doing comparisons during different time periods.

library card
I submitted a request for library card a few weeks ago but haven't seen it yet. Anyway to check on it? Thanks!
SIRS
I looked up the armadillos and found lots of different information. I was thinking about the frogs of Puerto Rico that we talked about last chapter in Spanish class. I found several different articles that I can use to add to my lesson for next year and some neat pictures that I would like my students to see along with a local folk tale that goes with the story.
Next, I went to look at Puerto Rico and liked the teacher resources and fast facts that were available for the commonwealth. Also things that would be very useful when we are discussing Puerto Rico.
Since tomorrow is our local science fair, I thought it might be interesting to see what was available. I was surprised at how easy it was to get to new and different topics. A good idea for next years students!

Learning Express
I downloaded a ebook on resume writing. This will be useful as my National Honor Society students prepare to write their own resumes. There was a lot of good information for many different careers.
Learning Express
I liked the test preparation that this site offers. There are so many different useful things for my students. I took the GED preparation test for hispanic learners for mathematics in Spanish. It was a good practice for my Spanish skills. These could be very useful for the students preparing for ACTs.

World Book Advanced
I am planning a country research project for my Spanish classes. I think this would be a great resource for my students to discover more about their country! I am excited to give it a try! I can't wait until my library card arrives so I can do more research at home!
Lesson 1 World Book
As I was researching using World Book Kids and World Book student I thought I would use this resource with my 1st grade daughter as a review. She is studying animals and their habitats. We could use the World Book Kids to read about animals and thier habitats. I can find more information in the World Book student version. It would help her to review the material and she can learn about topics of interest to her. A fun weekend activity on a really cold weekend to come.
Lesson 1 c
I used the World Book Foreign Language Edition to look up information on frogs. We are studying Puerto Rico in Spanish class now and I was curious what information would be available. My students wouldn't know all the words but I think it would be a great practice for them. It would allow them to read about a topic that is interesting to them too which would really help their motivations too.
I selected a topic and listened to the article being read aloud. This would be a great resource for listening to a native speaker. Since I am not a native speaker I think this would be a great resource for my students! This would help those students interested in pursuing college Spanish courses.

Day One
This is my first day of using a blog. I am looking forward to discovering new things in this class. I was interested in learning more when we had a short inservice at school. This will give me a way to follow up with what we started.
